It is also the 16th-largest river in the country when you measure its watershed area. This area is the land that drains into the river. The river is very important because it provides half of the fresh water for the Chesapeake Bay.

The river is made of two main parts called branches. The North Branch starts at the outlet of Otsego Lake in New York.

The West Branch travels through many towns and receives the large Pine Creek. Eventually, both branches meet near a place called Northumberland in central Pennsylvania. After they join, the river flows south toward the Chesapeake Bay.

This river is incredibly old and has been around for a very long time. Some lists of rivers say it may be 270 to 340 million years old.

It was likely formed when the earth was much different. The river cuts through ancient mountains called the Appalachians. It moves in a zigzag path through mountain ridges and gaps. This path helps the river drain nearly half of the land in Pennsylvania. The river even helped create the flooded valley where the Chesapeake Bay sits.

Many different people have lived along the Susquehanna throughout history. The Lenape people lived in the area and had many names for the river. Some names might mean "Muddy River" or "Oyster River."

In the 1670s, the Susquehannock people were part of a conflict with the Iroquois League. Later, the river became a busy path for moving goods. People used muscle-powered ferries and canal boats to travel.

Eventually, steam-powered railways became more common than the old canal boats.

Today, the river is still a busy place for many things. Harrisburg is the largest city located on the lower part of the river.

You can still see railroad tracks running along the shores of the river. The river also flows past many different types of land, from mountains to rural heartlands. At the very end of the river, a light called Concord Point Light stands at Havre de Grace.
