The Northern Neck is a special piece of land in the state of Virginia. It is a peninsula, which means it is surrounded by water on its sides. The Chesapeake Bay sits along its eastern edge. Two large rivers mark its boundaries. The Potomac River forms the northern border. The Rappahannock River marks the south. This land is one of three peninsulas on the western shore of the bay.

Learning about this place involves looking at its many parts. The area includes counties like Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, and Westmoreland. Some people also include King George County in the neck. In 1648, Northumberland County was formed to cover the land between the rivers. Later, the land was divided into different counties. The boundaries of these places changed many times over the years. Even the names of the counties have shifted since they were first made.

History tells us that explorers first visited this land a long time ago. Captain John Smith was the first European known to visit the area. He traveled up the Rappahannock River in the winter of 1607. He went on a second trip in June 1608. During his travels, he saw many Native American villages. He found many animals that had thick fur. Another traveler named Henry Fleet also spent time here. He helped start a trading post in what is now Washington, D.C.

Many important people in American history were born in the Northern Neck. You might know George Washington, who was a famous leader.

James Madison and James Monroe were also born here. These men helped shape the United States. Other famous people include Robert E. Lee and signers of the Declaration of Independence. The area was once called the "Athens of the New World." This was because many wealthy landowners lived there. They cared deeply about learning and helping their communities.

Life in the Northern Neck has changed quite a bit over time. Long ago, rich planters grew tobacco on large farms. These farms relied on the hard work of enslaved Africans and Black Americans. Later, the soil became worn out from growing tobacco. People began to grow different things like vegetables and grains. The area also became famous for its seafood. A town called Reedville became very wealthy because of its fishing industry. Today, the area remains a place with a very deep history.
