She is known for her beautiful artistry and her steady skill on the ice. For many years, she was one of the most popular female athletes in America. People loved watching her perform because she could show so much emotion through her movement. She won many important prizes during her long career. This included five World Championship titles and nine U.S. Championships. She also won a silver medal in 1998 and a bronze medal in 2002 at the Olympics.

Her many wins made her the most decorated skater in U.S. history.

Kwan's path to success required an incredible amount of hard work. She began skating seriously when she was about eight years old. To get enough practice, she and her sister Karen woke up very early. They often arrived at the ice rink at 5:00 am to train before school. They would then go back to the rink again right after school ended. This training was very expensive for her working-class family. Eventually, a member of the Los Angeles Figure Skating Club helped her family. This allowed her to train at the Ice Castle International Training Center in Lake Arrowhead, California.

Kwan was born on July 7, 1980, in Torrance, California. Her parents, Danny and Estella Kwan, moved to America from Hong Kong. Because of her family, Kwan grew up speaking both English and Cantonese. She attended local schools in California before becoming homeschooled in 1994. After high school, she spent one year at UCLA. Later, she transferred to the University of Denver. She said moving to Denver was a major turning point in her life. It was the time when she shifted from being a full-time skater to a full-time student.

Her skating style changed as she grew older and more mature. In the 1995 season, she began using more complex music and harder moves. One of her famous programs used music from the film score for King of Kings. She wore beautiful costumes, such as a purple dress with gold floral patterns. She also became very good at difficult jumps, like the triple Lutz.

During her competitions, she earned many perfect 6.0 marks from the judges. These scores were part of the old judging system used at the time. She was famous for being a very consistent and well-rounded skater. This helped her win many titles during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

After she retired from skating, Kwan started a new career in politics. She became very active with the Democratic Party. In 2022, President Joe Biden chose her to be the U.S. Ambassador to Belize. The Senate confirmed her role in September of that year. She officially took her oath of office in October 2022. She served in this important role until January 2025.
