To be a champion, an athlete must perform routines on different pieces of equipment. Liukin was excellent on the balance beam, which is a narrow bar. She was also a master of the uneven bars. These are two wooden bars set at different heights. She had to swing and flip between them with great control. Sometimes she even performed a Gienger release move on the bars. This is a move where the gymnast lets go and catches the bar again.

Liukin's journey began in Moscow, Russia, in 1989. Her parents were both champion gymnasts from the Soviet Union. Her father, Valeri Liukin, won two gold medals in the 1988 Olympics. Her mother, Anna Kotchneva, was a rhythmic gymnastics champion. When Nastia was two and a half, her family moved to the United States. They first lived in New Orleans before moving to Texas. In 1994, her father helped open a gymnastics academy in Plano, Texas. This is where she spent much of her training time.

Liukin's career is full of impressive numbers and records.

In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she won the gold medal with a score of 63.325. She also earned a silver medal on the uneven bars. That score was 16.725, which tied with a gymnast from China. Even after she stopped competing, Liukin stayed busy in the world of sports. She retired from professional gymnastics on July 2, 2012. Since then, she has done many different jobs.
