Gymnastics requires many different types of movement. Athletes must perform on various pieces of equipment. They compete in the all-around, which tests every single skill. They also compete in individual event finals. For example, Mustafina won the uneven bars final in 2012. She scored 16.133 to win the gold medal. She also won bronze medals on the floor and in the all-around.

Winning these medals shows how much hard work she put into her sport.

Mustafina's journey started early in her life. She was born in Yegoryevsk, Russia, on 30 September 1994. Her father, Farhat Mustafin, was also a great athlete. He won a bronze medal in wrestling at the 1976 Summer Olympics. Her mother, Yelena Kuznetsova, is a physics teacher.

Growing up with a sports star in the family likely helped her. She began competing in big international events when she was a junior. In 2007, she traveled to Montreal for the International Gymnix. She placed second in the all-around there.

Being a champion can also mean facing hard times. In 2011, Mustafina suffered a serious knee injury. She tore a ligament while performing a vault in Berlin. This meant she had to have surgery in Germany.

Her coaches wanted her to rest so she could be ready for the Olympics. She had to do slow workouts to get strong again. Even when she felt ready, her coaches told her to wait. She eventually returned to competition in Moscow in December 2011. She was nervous, but she showed great courage.

Mustafina has made history in the world of gymnastics. She was the first woman since 2000 to win all-around medals in two straight Olympics. She also tied with Svetlana Khorkina for most Olympic medals by a Russian gymnast. She was the ninth person to win medals on every event at a World Championship. In 2010, she won the all-around title in Rotterdam. She won five medals at that single event. Her many achievements show why she is such a respected name in sports.
