She is recognized as one of the most successful gymnasts in history. Mustafina achieved the title of 2010 all-around world champion. She also became the 2013 European all-around champion. Her skill on specific equipment is legendary, particularly on the uneven bars. She won Olympic gold medals on the uneven bars in both 2012 and 2016. Throughout her career, she earned a total of seven Olympic medals. This achievement allowed her to tie with Svetlana Khorkina. They share the record for the most Olympic medals won by a Russian gymnast.

Artistic gymnastics requires mastery of several distinct apparatuses and disciplines. The all-around competition tests a gymnast's ability across every event. These events include the vault, the balance beam, the floor exercise, and the uneven bars.

Gymnasts must perform complex routines with precision and strength. They are judged on their execution and the difficulty of their moves. Mustafina was remarkably versatile in these disciplines. She became only the ninth gymnast to win medals on every single event at a World Championship. This demonstrates her ability to excel regardless of the specific equipment being used.

Mustafina's journey toward greatness began with a strong athletic foundation. She was born in Yegoryevsk, Russia, on 30 September 1994. Her father, Farhat Mustafin, was a Volga Tatar and an Olympic athlete. He won a bronze medal in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1976 Summer Olympics. Her mother, Yelena Kuznetsova, is an ethnic Russian and a physics teacher.

Mustafina began her international junior career in 2007. In March of that year, she competed at the International Gymnix in Montreal. She earned second place in the all-around with a score of 58.825. She continued to find success in Japan and France during her junior years.

Her transition to the senior division brought massive international success. In 2010, she reached a major milestone at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam.

She became the first gymnast since 1996 to qualify for the all-around final and all four event finals. Mustafina won the individual all-around title with a score of 61.032. She also earned five medals at that single championship. This was more medals than any other gymnast, male or female, at the event. Her performance in Rotterdam established her as a dominant force in the sport.

Great athletes often face significant physical challenges. In April 2011, Mustafina suffered a serious injury during the European Championships in Berlin. While performing a 2.5 twisting Yurchenko vault, she tore her left anterior cruciate ligament. This injury required surgery in Straubing, Germany.

Her coaches, including Alexander Alexandrov and Valentina Rodionenko, prioritized her long-term health. They chose to protect her so she could compete in the upcoming Olympic Games. She spent months focused on rehabilitation and upper body conditioning. When she returned to competition in December 2011, she admitted to feeling intense nerves.

Mustafina reached the peak of her career during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

She also won the gold medal on the uneven bars with a score of 16.133. This victory ended a 12-year period where Russia had not won gold in Olympic gymnastics. Additionally, she won a bronze medal on the floor exercise. At the London Games, she was the most decorated gymnast of the entire competition.

Her achievements at the 2012 Olympics were statistically extraordinary. She was the most decorated athlete in any sport at those games, except for swimming.

Mustafina remains a significant figure in the history of Russian sports and international gymnastics.
