He is known for his many medals in big competitions. He won four Olympic medals during his long career. He earned gold in 2006 and 2014. He also won silver medals in 2002 and 2010. Plushenko was also a three-time World champion. He won seven European titles as well. He even won ten Russian national titles. People admire him for his great skill on the ice.

His journey started with a simple goal for health. His mother enrolled him in skating at age four. She wanted him to get more exercise because he had many colds. He first learned from a coach named Tatiana Skala. Later, he moved to Saint Petersburg in 1994. There, he trained with his longtime coach, Alexei Mishin.

He grew very fast in his training. By age 14, he was the youngest World Junior Champion ever.

Plushenko's career had many exciting and hard moments. He had a famous rivalry with another skater named Alexei Yagudin. In 2005, he had to have surgery in Germany for a groin injury. He also dealt with knee problems for many years.

He once took a break from competing to rest his body. He even skated on a stage during the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008. He performed with a violinist named Edvin Marton to help a singer named Dima Bilan. This showed that skating can be part of many kinds of shows.

One of his biggest ideas was about difficult jumps. He believed that "quads," or quadruple jumps, were the future of skating. He felt men must do these jumps to be true champions.

At the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, he won a silver medal. He was very disappointed with the judging scores there. He felt the rules needed to be better for skaters. Even so, he stayed strong and returned to win more medals later. He even received a special gold medal from jewelers in Siberia.

Sometimes, the rules of sports can be very tricky. In 2010, he lost his right to compete for a little while. This happened because he did skating shows without permission from his federation.
