He is known for being one of the best skaters in the world. He achieved something very rare called a Golden Slam. This means he won every major championship in one single season. That amazing season was 2001–2002. He won the Olympic Games and the World Championships. He also won the European Championships and the Grand Prix events. People admire him for his great skill on the ice.

Skating started for Alexei when he was only four years old. His mother, Zoya, introduced him to the ice to help his health. He worked very hard to learn difficult moves. He learned all his double jumps before he was ten. He learned five different triple jumps before he turned twelve. By age thirteen, he could even do the triple Axel jump. He trained with coaches like Alexander Mayorov and Alexei Mishin. Later, he worked with a coach named Tatiana Tarasova.

Alexei's career had many big wins and some hard moments. In 1998, he won the World Championships at age 18. This made him the second-youngest male World Champion ever. He won the gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. During that time, he received many perfect 6.0 scores from judges. However, he also dealt with many injuries. He had pneumonia in 1998 and a knee injury in 1999. He even had a foot injury in 2001.

Even when he was hurt, Alexei showed great strength. He was diagnosed with a hip disorder after the 2002 Olympics. In 2007, he had surgery to get a new hip joint. This new joint was made of titanium. He tried to return to competitive skating after his surgery. But another injury in 2007 made it too difficult to compete. He decided to focus on being a professional skater instead. He toured with shows like Stars on Ice for many years.

Today, Alexei stays very busy with many different jobs. He opened the Alexei Yagudin Figure Skating Center in Minsk, Belarus. He works there as a coach to help new skaters. He also works on television in Russia. He has been a show host and a commentator. He has even acted in plays and TV series. In 2017, he joined the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame. This is a special honor for the best skaters in history.
