Gymnastics training can be a very long journey. Alexei began his training when he was only six years old. He trained at a special school in Tolyatti. This school was part of a youth Olympic reserve. He worked with a coach named Yevgeny Nikolko. They worked together starting in the year 1983. Alexei even went to Tolyatti State University later on.

Alexei's career had many big moments and challenges. He made his first big debut in 1993. He was only sixteen years old at that time. In 1996, he won six medals at the Atlanta Olympics. He won two gold medals during those games. In the year 2000, he won the all-around gold medal. He called this special medal his "golden rattle." He wanted to bring it home to his newborn son.

Sometimes, the rules and judging in sports can change. In the 2004 Athens Olympics, Alexei used the high bar. He performed six release moves in a row. These are moves where the gymnast lets go of the bar. The judges gave him a score of 9.725. This made the crowd very upset and loud. The crowd even stopped the show for fifteen minutes. The judges later changed his score to 9.762.

Alexei showed great character even when things were hard. He asked the loud crowd to be quiet. He wanted the next athlete to be able to compete. For this, he won the 2005 Fair Play Award. The Russian Olympic Committee gave him $40,000 for his character. He is now a retired gymnast living in Tolyatti. He lives there with his wife and two sons.
