Gymnastics requires great skill on different pieces of equipment. Yelena was a master of the vault, the balance beam, and the uneven bars. She also excelled at the floor exercise. During her floor routines, she performed rare moves like a double layout. She also did a side Arabian jump with several flips. One of her most famous moves was a straddle jump to a prone support. This was a very new and creative move during the 1980s. She even had two moves named after her in the official rulebook.

She won gold medals at the Junior European Championships in 1982. She also won the USSR Cup many times. In 1984, she joined the Soviet national team. Because of a boycott, she could not go to the 1984 Olympics. Instead, she went to the Friendship Games in Czechoslovakia. There, she won a gold medal with her team.
