Vitaly Scherbo is a famous gymnast from Belarus. He is one of the most successful athletes in history.

This includes the team event and the all-around title. He also won titles on the floor, horizontal bar, parallel bars, pommel horse, rings, and vault.

Gymnastics requires many different types of strength and balance. Scherbo mastered many specific moves to win his medals. One special move is named after him. It is a Yurchenko-style vault.

During this vault, a gymnast does a full twist. They do this twist while doing a back-handspring. This happens between the springboard and the vaulting table. It is a very difficult and unique way to enter the vault.

Scherbo began his international career in the early 1990s. He first competed for the USSR team.

At that time, his teammate Grigori Misutin won the gold medal. Scherbo's talent grew very quickly during these years.

His most famous moment happened at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

He won six out of the eight possible gold medals. He won for the team and the all-around event. He also took gold on the pommel horse, rings, vault, and parallel bars. He tied for the gold medal on the pommel horse. This was a dominant performance that people still talk about today. He later moved to State College, Pennsylvania, in the United States with his wife, Irina.

Life brought hard times to Scherbo after his big Olympic success. In 1995, his wife was in a bad car accident. She hit a tree and was very badly hurt.

Doctors said she had only a 1 in 100 chance of surviving. Scherbo stopped his training during this sad time. However, Irina helped him start training again after she woke up. He even won another world title in 1996. Later, a motorcycle accident broke his hand, and he retired.
