She is known for her incredible skill and many medals. Throughout her career, she won seven Olympic medals. She also earned nine medals at the World Championships. This makes her the second most decorated U.S. gymnast in Olympic history. Only Simone Biles has more medals than her. Shannon's talent brought much pride to her country. She showed the world what hard work can achieve.

Gymnastics requires many different skills on different pieces of equipment. Shannon was especially good at the balance beam, which is a narrow wooden bar. She was also great on the uneven bars and the floor exercise. In 1991, she scored a 39.875 at the Gander Memorial. This was the highest total score ever by an American woman under the old 10.0 scale. During the 1992 Olympics, she was very steady. She performed all sixteen of her routines without any serious mistakes. Many of her routines earned scores of 9.9 or higher.

Shannon's journey began when she was very young. She started gymnastics at the age of five. When she was nine, she traveled to Moscow for a gymnastics camp. She grew up in Edmond, Oklahoma, after moving there as a baby. As a teenager, she went to Edmond North High School. Her school helped her by giving her a flexible schedule. This allowed her to balance her classes with her heavy training. She worked hard to manage her schoolwork and her sports life.

Her biggest wins happened during the 1990s. In 1993 and 1994, she was the world all-around champion. This means she was the best overall gymnast in the world. In 1996, she reached a huge goal at the Atlanta Olympics. She won a gold medal on the balance beam. She also won gold as part of a team called the Magnificent Seven.

She also runs the Shannon Miller Foundation. This foundation works to help children with issues like cancer and obesity. In 2011, she fought a brave battle with ovarian cancer. She finished her treatment and became a survivor.
