Artistic gymnastics requires mastery of several different apparatuses. These include the uneven bars, the balance beam, the floor exercise, and the vault. Miller was particularly famous for her skill on the balance beam. This apparatus is a narrow wooden bar that requires extreme precision. In 1991, she achieved a historic milestone at the Arthur Gander Memorial. She earned a 39.875 total score. Under the traditional 10.0 scoring scale, this was the highest total ever recorded by an American woman.

Miller's competitive journey involved many distinct stages of growth. She began training at the age of five. At age nine, she traveled to Moscow to attend a gymnastics camp. As a teenager, she attended Edmond North High School in Oklahoma. Her school provided a flexible program to accommodate her intense training and travel. This allowed her to manage both her education and her elite athletic schedule. She was coached for most of her career by Steve Nunno and Peggy Liddick.

Her rise to international prominence occurred between 1991 and 1996. In 1991, she won two silver medals at her first World Championships in Indianapolis. The 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona served as a major turning point. Miller won five medals at those Games, making her the most successful American athlete there. She earned two silver and three bronze medals. Notably, she was one of only two female gymnasts to compete in every event final. She performed all sixteen of her routines without any serious errors.

In the following years, Miller achieved unprecedented dominance. She won the world all-around titles in both 1993 and 1994. This made her the first American gymnast to win back-to-back world all-around championships. In 1996, she reached the pinnacle of her career at the Atlanta Olympics. She won the gold medal on the balance beam. She also earned a team gold medal as a member of the "Magnificent Seven." This group was the first American women's team to win Olympic gold.

Beyond her athletic statistics, Miller's legacy is defined by her resilience. In 2011, she faced a significant health challenge when she was diagnosed with germ cell ovarian cancer. She underwent three cycles of chemotherapy to treat the illness. She successfully completed her treatment and received a clean bill of health in June 2011. This experience shaped her later work as an advocate. She now uses her platform to speak about survivorship and the importance of health.
