She is best known for her incredible skill on the gymnastics floor. In 2004, she became a huge star at the Olympic Games in Athens. She won the gold medal in the all-around event. This means she was the best gymnast across all different events. She was the first American woman to win this title at an Olympics that was not boycotted. She also won a silver medal on the balance beam during those same Games. Her hard work helped her earn a place in the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame.

Gymnastics requires a lot of strength and focus. To be an all-around champion, a person must be great at many different things. These include the vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. Carly had to perform these moves perfectly to win. She even has a special move named after her in the rule books. It is called an Arabian double salto forward tucked. This is a difficult move performed on the balance beam. It shows just how much skill she brought to the sport.

Carly's journey started very early in her life. She first tried gymnastics in 1994 after attending a cousin's birthday party. She practiced at a club called Elite Gymnastics in Baton Rouge. Her coach there was Yohanan Moyal, who was an Olympian from Israel. By the year 2000, she was only 12 years old and competing internationally. She traveled to places like Belgium to enter the Top Gym Tournament. In 2002, she became the U.S. junior national all-around champion. She worked very hard to move from junior to senior competitions.

Her career had many big moments and some hard times too. In 2003, she won silver at the World Gymnastics Championships in Anaheim, California. She also helped the United States team win a gold medal there. However, she once had to miss a national competition because of a broken elbow. At the 2004 Olympics, she had a stressful start on the vault. Even so, she stayed strong on the bars, beam, and floor. She narrowly defeated Svetlana Khorkina from Russia to take the top spot. This victory made her a hero to many fans.

After her time in gymnastics, Carly found a new passion. She had some back problems with bulging discs in her lower back. Her doctor told her she needed to stop to stay healthy. So, she retired from gymnastics in 2006 and began singing. She signed with Papa Joe's Records and later MusicMind Records. She even released an album called Back to the Beginning in 2009. Carly also appeared on a show called Celebrity Duets. Today, she lives a happy life with her husband and three children.
