She is known for her great skill on the vault and the floor exercise. She won four Olympic medals during her long career. These include two gold medals from the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She also won a bronze medal with the Russian team in 2004. People around the world admire her for her talent and her strength. Her hard work helped her earn a spot in the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2015.

Gymnastics requires many different skills on different pieces of equipment. Elena was especially good at the vault and the floor exercise. She was also very talented on the balance beam and the uneven bars. In the vault, she performed a move called a Tsukahara. This move includes a stretched 720-degree turn. On the balance beam, she has a special move named after her too. This move is a round-off followed by a flic-flac and a 360-degree turn. These are called eponymous skills because they are named after her.

Elena's journey in gymnastics began when she was only six years old. She decided to start training after she watched a competition on television. Her path was not always easy or smooth. One doctor once thought she had a heart problem, but another doctor said she was okay. She also had to deal with many different injuries. She hurt her foot, her leg, and her back during her career. Even when things were hard, like when her father died in 2000, she chose to keep competing.

Elena competed in many big events all over the world. She won gold medals at the World Championships in 1999 and 2002. She also won many prizes at the World Cup and the European Championships. In 2000, she won gold on the vault with a score of 9.712. She also won gold on the floor exercise at those same Olympics.
