Skating at a high level requires amazing skill and practice. Irina was the first woman to land a triple lutz-triple loop combination. This means she completed two very hard jumps right after each other. She also invented a special move called the Biellmann spin with a foot change. In this move, the skater spins while holding their foot in a specific way. She was also known for her speed and her strong jumps. These skills helped her win a record 17 titles on the Grand Prix circuit.

Irina started her journey on the ice when she was only four years old. Her mother encouraged her to begin skating at that young age. By the time she was six, she began working with a coach named Zhanna Gromova. She first showed her talent as a junior skater in 1994. That year, she won a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships in Colorado Springs. This moment started a famous twelve-year rivalry with the American skater Michelle Kwan.

Throughout her career, Irina faced many big competitions and tough moments. In 2002, she won a silver medal at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. She won her first World title later that same year in Nagano, Japan. However, her path was not always easy or smooth. In 2003, she had to miss most of a season because she was sick. She was diagnosed with vasculitis, which caused fatigue and swelling in her legs. Even after staying in the hospital, she made a brave comeback to the ice.

Her comeback was truly amazing and showed her great strength. In 2005, she was undefeated and won every single competition she entered. That year, she won her second World title at the World Championships. She said that performance was the "skate of her life" because her family was there. She also broke a record by winning her seventh European title in 2006. This feat made her the most successful ladies' skater in the history of that event.
