She is known for being a very young champion. She became the youngest single skater to win an Olympic gold medal. She also won the World championship at a very young age. Even before her big wins, she loved the sport. When she was only two, she stood on a bowl to pretend she was a gold medalist. She started roller skating at age three. By age nine, she was already a national champion in roller skating. She soon moved her skills to the ice rink.

Figure skating requires many difficult moves and jumps. Tara was famous for her amazing jumps in competition. She was the first woman to complete a triple loop–triple loop combination. This specific jump became her signature move. In her big programs, she often performed seven triple jumps. To make her skating look more mature, she took daily ballet classes. She also worked with choreographers to create programs that showed delight. These steps helped her move with grace and skill on the ice.

Tara's journey to the top involved moving to different places. She was born in Philadelphia on June 10, 1982. Her family lived in New Jersey during her early years. In 1991, her family moved to Sugar Land, Texas. She trained at a public rink called The Galleria. Later, she and her mother moved back to Delaware. In 1995, they moved to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. There, she trained with her coach, Richard Callaghan, at the Detroit Skating Club. This training helped her prepare for world-class contests.

Many big wins defined her competitive career. In 1997, at age 14, she became the youngest U.S. champion. This broke a record set by Sonya Klopfer in 1951. That same year, she won the World Championships. She was even younger than the previous record holder, Sonja Henie. Her most famous win came at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Her free skate was the most difficult program in Olympic history up to that time. She skated with joy and filled the rink with her talent.

During her career, Tara had a famous rivalry with Michelle Kwan. The two skaters often competed against each other for gold medals. In 1997, Tara won the U.S. title by defeating the reigning champion, Kwan. At the 1998 Olympics, they were both favorites to win. While Kwan won the gold, Tara won the silver medal. After she retired from competition in 1998, she did live shows. In 2014, she became a commentator for NBC. Now, she helps fans watch and understand figure skating on television.
