Matthew Shepard was a student at the University of Wyoming. He was a political science major. He also studied languages. His father said he was an optimistic person. He was known for being very approachable. Matthew cared deeply about equality. He wanted people to accept their differences.

In October 1998, a very sad event happened near Laramie, Wyoming. Two men named Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson met Matthew at a lounge. They offered him a ride in their truck. Instead, they took him to a remote area. They robbed him and beat him. They tied him to a split-rail fence. They left him there in near-freezing temperatures.

Matthew was found by a cyclist named Aaron Kreifels. He was in a coma. Rescuers took him to Poudre Valley Hospital in Colorado. He had very severe head injuries. Doctors could not perform surgery. Matthew died on October 12, 1998. He was only 21 years old. People around the world held candlelight vigils for him.

Law enforcement arrested McKinney and Henderson quickly. A police officer found Matthew's shoes and credit card in a truck. Henderson pleaded guilty to murder and kidnapping. He testified against McKinney to avoid the death penalty. McKinney was found guilty of felony murder. Both men received two consecutive life sentences. They were sent to the Wyoming State Penitentiary.

This tragedy brought attention to hate crime laws. Many people believed Matthew was targeted because he was gay. In 2009, the United States Congress passed a new law. It is called the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. President Barack Obama signed it into law. Matthew's parents, Dennis and Judy Shepard, started a foundation. They became activists to help others.
