Matthew Shepard was a student at the University of Wyoming. He was known as a kind and optimistic young man. He cared a lot about fairness for all people.

In October 1998, something very sad happened. Two men, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson, attacked Matthew near Laramie. They robbed him and beat him. They left him tied to a fence in the cold. Matthew died six days later from his injuries.

The men were arrested for the crime. Henderson pleaded guilty to murder. McKinney was found guilty of murder. Both men received life in prison. Many people believed the attack was a hate crime. They thought the men targeted Matthew because he was gay.

Matthew's death changed the law. In 2009, the United States passed a new law. It is called the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. This law helps protect people from hate crimes. Matthew's parents also started a foundation. They work to help others and fight for rights.
