This high location makes it a very special place to visit. It is the second-most populous city in all of Angola. Only the capital city, Luanda, has more people living there.

The weather in Lubango is quite different from other parts of the country. Because it sits 1,760 metres above sea level, it is very high. This makes Lubango the coldest city in Angola.

History tells us how the city first began. In 1882, about one thousand settlers came from the Madeira Islands.

These farmers helped build the settlement in 1885. Later, the Portuguese government named the city Sá da Bandeira. It grew into a major centre with many buildings. There were banks, a hospital, and a large cathedral. The city was later renamed Lubango after Angola gained independence.
