It is an ancient yoga pose from India. Many people use it to help them focus. This pose is used in Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and Tantra traditions. It is also a symbol of healthy living in Western culture. The name comes from the Sanskrit words for lotus and seat.

The sacred lotus flower is a very important symbol. It grows in mud but blooms high above the water. This represents growth toward perfection and enlightenment.

To do this pose, you sit cross-legged on the floor.

You place one foot on top of the opposite thigh. The sole of the foot faces upward. Your heel stays close to your abdomen. Then, you place the other foot on the opposite thigh. You try to make both sides look the same. This pose needs very open hips to work well. You can sit on a cushion or blanket for help. This tilts your pelvis forward to make it easier.

There are many different versions of this sitting pose. One version is called easy pose, or Sukhasana. In this version, you just cross your legs in front of you. Half lotus is another way to sit. In half lotus, one leg stays on the ground. The other leg is in the full lotus position. There is also a bound lotus pose. In this one, you reach around your back to grab your feet. Some people even try the psychic union pose. This involves bending your forehead toward the floor.

This pose has a very long history in many books. The 8th century book Patanjalayogashastravivarana describes these sitting postures. A figure in lotus pose appears on coins of Chandragupta II. The Nisvasattvasamhita Nayasutra is a text from the 6th to 10th century. It tells people to sit in lotus during meditation. The 15th century Hatha Yoga Pradipika says this pose destroys diseases. It also says the pose helps with breathing. The 19th century Sritattvanidhi also shows this pose. Even the 4th century Darshana Upanishad mentions it.

Many famous figures are shown in this position in art.

Statues of the Buddha often show him on a lotus flower. In Hinduism, the god Shiva is often shown meditating this way. Jainism also shows Tirthankaras in the lotus position. However, you must be very careful with your body. Forcing your legs can hurt the cartilage in your knees. The hips must rotate about 115 degrees for the full pose. It is better to use a strap than to force a joint. This keeps the practice safe and restful.
