Li Hongzhi is a religious leader from China. He founded a movement called Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa. This movement is now based in the United States. Li began his public teachings on May 13, 1992. He started in the city of Changchun. He traveled across China to give lectures and teach special exercises.

Falun Gong works through specific teachings and physical exercises. Li's teachings are collected in his lectures. He holds the power to define what the belief system means. He tells his followers that these practices can lead to perfect health. Some followers believe he has supernatural powers like clairvoyance. This means the ability to see things far away. He also says he can prevent illness.

There are many different stories about Li's early life. His supporters say he learned from several spiritual masters. One master, Quan Jue, began training him at age four. Another master, Baji Zhenren, taught him martial arts at age twelve. A third master named Zhendaozi taught him inner cultivation in 1972. These accounts say Li reached a very high level of energy. He then began creating his own system in 1984.

History shows that the Chinese government and Li's followers disagree on many facts. The government began suppressing the group in July 1999. They accused the movement of being a doomsday cult. They also claim Li was an ordinary man with no special training. They say he worked at an army horse farm and as a trumpet player. There is also a debate about his birth date. Li says he was born in 1951. The government says he was born in 1952.

Today, Li's influence can be seen in several different organizations. He is linked to the Shen Yun performing arts group. He is also linked to media groups like The Epoch Times. These groups help share the beliefs of Falun Gong. Li moved to the United States permanently in 1998. He rarely appears in public now. Most people see his ideas through websites or quotes.
