Falun Gong is a spiritual movement that people also call Falun Dafa. It is a system of belief and practice that focuses on improving the self. Followers use meditation and special physical exercises to help them grow. They also focus on their moral character through specific teachings. This movement aims to help people reach a higher spiritual state. Many people around the world follow these traditions today.

The practice works through two main parts. First, people perform a set of five exercises. These include movements and quiet meditation. Second, people work on their inner character. They try to follow three core principles: truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance. These three virtues are seen as the basic rules of the universe. By following them, practitioners hope to improve their lives.

Li Hongzhi founded the movement in China during the early 1990s. He emerged from the qigong movement, which involves energy exercises. His teachings draw from Buddhist and Taoist traditions. He wrote a foundational text called Zhuan Falun in 1995. Followers see him as a leader who understands the universe. Some believe his teachings are higher than other traditions.

The history of the group includes many challenges. In the late 1990s, the Chinese government began to see the group as a threat. On 25 April 1999, over 10,000 practitioners gathered peacefully in Beijing. They wanted the right to practice their faith. However, the Chinese government banned the group in July 1999. Reports from 2008 and 2009 noted many arrests and deaths. Freedom House estimates there are between 7 to 20 million practitioners today.

Today, Falun Gong is a global movement with many different parts. The group has a headquarters in Dragon Springs, New York. They run several organizations, such as the Shen Yun dance troupe. They also own media groups like The Epoch Times. These media outlets share their views on many topics. The group remains very active in many different countries.
