Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual movement founded by Li Hongzhi in China during the early 1990s. It emerged from the qigong movement, which focuses on energy exercises. The system combines physical exercises and meditation with moral teachings. These teachings are rooted in Buddhist and Taoist traditions. However, the movement presents its own unique interpretations of these faiths. Practitioners aim to achieve spiritual elevation and return to an original, true self.

The practice functions through two primary components: physical exercises and moral cultivation. The physical side involves a set of five exercises, including specific movements and meditation. The second part is the refinement of one's character or temperament. This refinement requires practitioners to align their lives with the fundamental nature of the cosmos. They must also work to abandon desires and negative behaviors. These negative behaviors include things like greed, theft, and deception.

At the center of the belief system are three core virtues: Zhen, Shan, and Ren. Zhen represents truthfulness and sincerity. Shan stands for compassion, benevolence, and kindness. Ren refers to forbearance, tolerance, and endurance. Followers believe these three principles are the basic organizing principles of the entire universe. They are seen as the only true criteria for distinguishing good from bad. Adhering to these virtues is considered essential to the entire cultivation process.

Falun Gong teachings also include specific concepts regarding karma and virtue. Karma is described as a black substance that accumulates in the body through wrong deeds. Virtue is a white substance generated through good deeds and suffering. The ratio of karma to virtue is believed to determine a person's fortune in this life or the next. The goal of cultivation is to transform black karma into white virtue. This process is intended to eliminate the root causes of illness and lead to spiritual consummation.

The history of the movement is marked by significant tension with the Chinese government. In the early 1990s, the movement was initially supported by some Chinese government agencies. However, its rapid growth led officials to perceive it as a threat. On 25 April 1999, over 10,000 practitioners gathered peacefully in Beijing to seek official recognition. In July 1999, the Chinese government banned the group and labeled it an illegal organization. This ban led to mass arrests and widespread reports of abuse.

Following the ban, the movement faced severe challenges. By 2008, U.S. government reports estimated that as much as half of China's labor camp population consisted of Falun Gong practitioners. Human rights groups estimated that at least 2,000 practitioners had died from persecution by 2009. Before the 1999 ban, the Chinese government estimated there were 70 million adherents. Today, Freedom House estimates there are between 7 million and 20 million practitioners globally. The movement now maintains a global presence, including a headquarters in Dragon Springs, New York.

It also manages the Epoch Media Group, which includes New Tang Dynasty Television and The Epoch Times newspaper. These media entities are known for their opposition to the Chinese Communist Party. They have also been noted for promoting specific political views and various conspiracy theories in the United States and Europe. The movement's teachings continue to influence its followers' views on science, medicine, and modern society.
