Li Hongzhi is a prominent Chinese religious leader. He is the founder of Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa. This movement is now a United States-based new religious movement. Li began his public teachings on May 13, 1992, in Changchun, China. He traveled across the country giving lectures and teaching exercises. By 1995, he began teaching the practice abroad. He became a permanent resident of the United States in 1998.

Falun Gong functions through a combination of lectures and physical exercises. Li holds the authority to define the core beliefs of the system. His teachings are compiled from his various lectures. The practice focuses on moral content and accessibility to the public. Li differentiates his system from other qigong practices by emphasizing these aspects. He claims that the practice can lead to perfect health. He also suggests that practitioners can attain supernatural powers quickly.

There are two very different accounts of Li's early life. Supporters describe a journey of intense spiritual development. They say he was trained by several masters starting at age four. A master named Quan Jue taught him the Buddha School. Later, Baji Zhenren provided instruction in martial arts and physical skills. In 1972, a master named Zhendaozi taught him inner cultivation through qigong. This teaching focused on xinxing, which means moral character.

In contrast, the Chinese government provides a different version of his history. They aim to show that Li was an ordinary person. According to these accounts, Li had an unremarkable education. He did not attend high school but finished through correspondence courses. His work history included jobs at an army horse farm and as a trumpet player. He also worked as a clerk for a procurement company. These accounts claim he had no knowledge of the masters described by his followers.

A significant controversy involves Li's date of birth. Falun Gong sources state he was born on May 13, 1951. The Chinese government claims he was born in July 1952. Authorities point out that his claimed birthday matches that of Gautama Buddha. They also cite a midwife who remembers delivering him in 1952. Li describes the birth date issue as a bureaucratic error from the Cultural Revolution. He has called accusations regarding his birthday a "smear."

The movement faced a major turning point in July 1999. The Chinese government began a campaign to suppress Falun Gong. They officially accused the movement of being a doomsday cult. This suppression led to Li retreating from the public eye. Since 2000, he has rarely appeared in person. His presence is now mostly felt through electronic media and websites.

Today, Li's influence extends to several large organizations. He is associated with the Shen Yun performing arts group. He is also linked to media outlets like The Epoch Times. These organizations act as extensions of Falun Gong. They promote the philosophical beliefs of the movement. They also operate New Tang Dynasty Television. These groups help connect the movement's ideas to a global audience.
