It was created by an American author named L. Ron Hubbard. He first shared his ideas in 1950. At that time, he called them Dianetics. He presented them as a type of talk therapy. Later, he changed these ideas into a religion. He named this new belief system Scientology. This name comes from Latin and Greek words. It roughly means "knowing about knowing" or the "science of knowledge."

Many followers hold specific beliefs about the mind. They believe that traumatic events leave recordings in the subconscious. These recordings might even come from past lives. To find relief, members participate in an activity called "auditing."

This is one of the main things people do in the organization. They also undergo training to learn how to audit others. These activities follow a chart called The Bridge to Total Freedom. There are two main levels of achievement. One is called "Clear." The other is called "Operating Thetan."

His first organization for Dianetics went bankrupt. By 1952, he lost the rights to his own book. He then began to move toward a religious model. In 1953, he started the Church of Scientology. He also formed other groups like the Church of American Science. In 1959, he bought Saint Hill Manor in the United Kingdom. The movement grew over the years. By 2014, one estimate said there were 30,000 members.
