The word "cult" is a complicated term with many different meanings. It comes from the Latin word "cultus," which means worship.

In modern English, people often use the word in a negative way. It can describe groups that have unusual or extreme religious beliefs. Some people use it to talk about gangs or even terrorist groups. However, an older meaning refers to a set of religious practices. This older sense is not negative and is often used by historians. For example, they might discuss the imperial cult of ancient Rome.

How these groups work can vary quite a bit. Some are small and local, while others are international. Some international groups may have millions of members. Many people describe these groups as being led by a charismatic leader. This leader often has tight control over the members. Some researchers say these groups arise spontaneously around new ideas. Others see them as being like small, strict political systems. These groups often focus on a specific person, object, or goal.

Scholars have studied these movements for a long time. Sociological study of new religious movements began in the 1930s. A famous thinker named Max Weber was very important to this study. He looked at the difference between a church and a sect. Later, a theologian named Ernst Troeltsch added a "mystical" category. This category was for people having very personal religious experiences. An American sociologist named Howard P. Becker also helped organize these ideas. He studied how small groups might lack formal organization.

There are many different ways to classify these groups. Scholars William Sims Bainbridge and Rodney Stark suggested three specific types. They named them cult movements, client cults, and audience cults. A cult movement is a complete organization. An audience cult is loosely organized and uses the media. A client cult offers specific services, like meditation sessions. In the 1960s, John Lofland studied the Unification Church in California. He wrote about how people joined groups through personal relationships.

Some people use the term "destructive cult" to describe harmful groups. The anti-cult movement often uses this label for groups they find unethical. They may believe these groups use mind control to influence people. This can lead to serious problems for families and members. For instance, the Peoples Temple is often seen as a major example. Some scholars worry that using such labels can be dehumanizing. Because of this, many academics now prefer different names. They often use "new religious movement" to stay more neutral.
