Some people use it to describe groups with unusual ideas. These groups might follow a single leader or a specific goal. They can be very small or have millions of members.

Many experts find the word hard to define. Because of this, they often use new names. They might say "new religious movement" instead. This helps them stay fair when they study people.

Some groups are called "destructive cults." This term is used by people who think a group is harmful. They may believe a leader uses mind control to rule. This can cause big problems for families and members. Some people think this label is too harsh. They worry it can be used to judge groups unfairly.

Other groups are called "doomsday cults." These groups believe in an apocalypse, which is a great change to the world.
