Extremism

society Maturity 11-13 politics Next article →

This article covers sensitive topics: politics. Parents can manage visibility in Parental Controls.

Extremism means having views that are far from the middle. Most people live in the mainstream. This means they hold ideas that most others share. Extremists hold ideas that are very different.

Some people use the word to mean something bad. They might use it to label groups they do not like. But others use the word just to describe a way of thinking. It can be about politics or religion.

Extremist groups can act in different ways. Some use nonviolent ways to reach their goals. Other groups use violence. Some groups may target people or buildings.

Why do people become extreme? Some researchers say it is about how people feel. They might feel sad, angry, or treated unfairly. A 2018 study found that people with extreme views may find it hard to change their minds. They may feel very sure they are right, even with new facts.

Not all extreme ideas are bad. Martin Luther King Jr. was called an extremist. He used that idea to fight for love and justice. He believed it was important to choose the right kind of extreme.
