There are two main types of polarization. One type is about ideas. This is called ideological polarization. People have very different views on rules and laws. The other type is about feelings. We call this affective polarization. This is when people feel dislike or distrust for others. They may feel that the other side is a threat to their way of life.

Experts look at two groups of people. They look at elites and the masses. Elites are leaders like elected officials. Mass polarization happens with the general public. In the United States, some leaders use tough tactics to win. This can pull parties further apart. This may also lead to more extreme ideas from voters.

Polarization is growing in many parts of the world. This includes Europe and parts of Asia and Africa. Some people say that talking with respect can help. It can help people trust each other again.
