Centrism is a way of thinking about politics. It sits in the middle of the left and the right. People in the middle are called centrists. They often want to make slow and steady changes. They do not want sudden or big shifts.

This idea started a long time ago. It began during the French Revolution. At that time, some leaders sat between two other groups. One group was very radical. The other group wanted things to stay the same. Later, a way of thinking called liberalism became popular. It focused on individual rights. Another group called agrarianism also focused on the middle. These people cared about farmers and the land.

In many countries, centrist parties help others work together. They can join both left and right groups. This is called a coalition. This helps different sides reach a deal. However, centrist parties are often junior partners. This means they have less power to make their own rules. In the 1950s, many world leaders were centrists. That number went down to about 15 percent by 2020.
