Many people believed that new goods would soon arrive. They called these goods "cargo." They thought their ancestors would bring this cargo to them. This cargo could be food or tools. It could also be things like clothes or metal.

Some leaders led these groups. These leaders were often called prophets. They told people to do special things to get the goods. Some people danced in new ways. Others acted like soldiers. They might march in lines or raise flags.

Some people even made wooden headphones or control towers. They did this to mimic what they saw from soldiers.

These movements often happened during hard times. Some groups wanted to bring back old traditions. Others wanted to change how their society worked. Many people used these beliefs to find hope. Today, most experts use different names for these groups. They say the term "cargo cult" does not fit everyone.
