His journey with the religion began when he was a young boy. He was born on April 30, 1960, in Bristol, Pennsylvania. As a child, he played sports like football and baseball. He also dealt with severe allergies and asthma. After his family joined Scientology in 1971, they moved to West Sussex, England. There, he worked at Saint Hill Manor. The organization remembers him as a "12-year-old prodigy" because he became a very young professional auditor.

As a teenager, Miscavige began working in many different roles. In 1976, he moved to Clearwater, Florida, to join the Sea Org. This is a management group for the church. His early jobs included delivering telexes, working in food service, and taking photos for brochures. He eventually joined the Commodore's Messenger Organization. This elite group carried personal orders from the founder, L. Ron Hubbard. By 1977, he was working directly under Hubbard as a cameraman for training films.

Miscavige rose to high leadership after Hubbard died in 1986. He helped set up new groups like the Religious Technology Center in 1982. This was done to manage the founder's wealth and intellectual property. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, he held roles in the Watchdog Committee and the All Clear Unit. He also managed Author Services Inc., which handles Hubbard's books. These changes helped reshape how the church was organized.

His leadership has been the subject of much debate and many legal actions. Some people have made serious allegations against him. These claims include reports of human trafficking, child abuse, and the mistreatment of staff members. He has also been investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Miscavige and the Church of Scientology deny most of these claims. They often argue that these statements are not true and attack the character of those making them.
