Semion Mogilevich

society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Semion Mogilevich is a man known to many law enforcement groups. The FBI calls him the most dangerous gangster in the world.

He is believed to lead a massive criminal empire. This empire spans many different countries. Some people call him "The Brainy Don" because he is good at business. He has connections to many powerful people in government and the military. Agencies in the United States and Europe say he is the boss of most Russian Mafia groups. He is accused of many serious crimes like drug trafficking and extortion.

His life began in Kyiv, Ukraine, in 1946. He was born into a Jewish family in the Podil neighborhood. He later studied economics at the University of Lviv. He made his first fortune by tricking people who wanted to move to other countries. He would take their jewelry and art to sell. Instead of giving them the money, he kept it for himself. He spent time in prison for two terms during this time. In the 1980s, he worked with a group called the Solntsevskaya Bratva.

In 1991, Mogilevich moved to Hungary and married Katalin Papp. This marriage helped him get a Hungarian passport. He lived in a strong, fortified villa near Budapest. He used his money to buy many different businesses. One business was a factory called "Army Co-Op" that made anti-aircraft guns. In 1994, his group took control of Inkombank in Russia. This was one of the largest private banks in that country. The bank eventually collapsed in 1998 due to suspicions of money laundering.

Mogilevich has been involved in many different places and events. In the early 1990s, he bought an apartment in Trump Tower. In 1995, police raided a party in Prague where he was supposed to be. The police thought other criminals wanted to hurt him there. In Canada, a company called YBM Magnex was linked to him. The FBI raided its headquarters in 1998. This caused the company to lose all its value very quickly. He was also linked to a scheme involving toxic waste.

Today, the search for Mogilevich continues. The FBI put him on their "Ten Most Wanted" list in 2009. He was later removed because he lives in a country that does not send criminals to the U.S. He currently lives in Moscow, Russia. The U.S. government offers a reward of up to $5 million to find him. This reward is part of a program to stop organized crime. Even though many years have passed, law enforcement agencies still want to catch him.
