Meyer Lansky was a very famous figure in the world of organized crime. He was born on July 4, 1902, in Grodno in the Russian Empire. Today, that place is known as Belarus. When he was a young boy, he moved to the United States. He arrived in 1911 through the port of Odessa. He lived on the Lower East Side of Manhattan with his mother and brother.

During his youth, he met Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel and Charles "Lucky" Luciano. These men became his lifelong partners in various business ventures.

Lansky was known as a financial organizer and a math expert. He used his knowledge of mathematical odds to run gambling games. He focused on gambling instead of selling drugs. He wanted his games to be fair so people would trust them. He made sure his staff had high integrity. This meant his games were not "clip joints" where people were cheated. He built successful gambling operations in Florida and Cuba. He also used Swiss bank accounts to keep his money private.

History shows that Lansky helped the government during World War II. He worked with the Office of Naval Intelligence on a plan called Operation Underworld. This plan helped find German spies and people who might hurt ships. Lansky helped arrange a deal to get Lucky Luciano out of prison. In return, the Mafia helped keep the New York waterfront safe. This was important because German submarines were sinking many ships.

After the war, Lansky helped his friend Siegel with the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. This was a very big and famous project.

Lansky had many important connections in different countries. In 1929, he helped start a group called the National Crime Syndicate. This group helped different gangs work together as a business. In Cuba, he was a very powerful man in the gambling industry. He was friends with the Cuban leader, Fulgencio Batista. Lansky helped build the Havana Riviera hotel in 1957. He used $14 million to help build it. He even taught young Cubans how to run games like blackjack and roulette.

Many people have wondered about how much money Lansky actually had. Some stories say he was incredibly rich, but historians are not sure. When he died on January 15, 1983, his estate was actually modest. The FBI investigated him for nearly fifty years. They only ever convicted him of illegal gambling offenses. He was never found guilty of major violent crimes. His life was a mix of criminal business and helping the government.
