Sam Giancana was a powerful leader in the world of organized crime. He was born Gilormo Giangana on May 24, 1908, in Chicago. His parents, Antonio and Antonia, moved to the United States from Sicily, Italy. As a teenager, Sam joined a street crew called the 42 Gang. The gang took its name from the story of Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves. They felt they were even better than the group in the story. Sam became known as a very skilled driver and a tough person.

Sam's career in crime grew very quickly over many years. He joined the Chicago Outfit, a large group of criminals, in the late 1930s. In the 1940s and 1950s, he ran illegal gambling and liquor businesses in Louisiana. He also helped his group take over a lottery system in Chicago. This lottery brought in millions of dollars every year. Because of this success, he became the boss of the Chicago Outfit in 1957. Even as boss, he still had to talk to older leaders like Paul Ricca.

History shows that Sam was connected to very important people and events. Some people believe he helped John F. Kennedy win the 1960 presidential election. He reportedly used his connections to help unions support Kennedy. However, Sam later felt unhappy with this choice. This was because the President's brother, Robert F. Kennedy, worked hard to stop organized crime. This created a difficult situation for Sam and his group. It shows how the choices of one person can change history.

During the early 1960s, Sam worked with a secret government group called the CIA. The CIA wanted to remove the leader of Cuba, Fidel Castro. Documents show the CIA reached out to Sam and other Mafia leaders in 1960. They offered $150,000 for help with this mission. Sam even suggested using poison pills to try to stop Castro. One plan involved a man named Juan Orta who had access to Castro's food. The plans did not work, and the mission was eventually canceled.

Sam's life faced many hard challenges toward the end. In 1965, he went to prison for one year for contempt of court. After he was released in 1966, he fled to Cuernavaca, Mexico. He stayed there until 1974, when he was deported back to the United States. He returned to his home in Chicago. Sadly, Sam was murdered on June 19, 1975, at his house in Oak Park, Illinois. This happened just before he was supposed to speak to a government committee.
