The Outfit is known for being very large and very violent. It is considered one of the most active crime groups in the Midwest. In the early 1900s, small street gangs controlled different parts of Chicago. A man named Vincenzo Colosimo helped bring these groups together. He used political connections to protect his criminal work. Later, the group grew much larger during a time called Prohibition. This was a time when the law banned alcohol. Because of this, the gang made money by selling illegal drinks. They used many different crews to control different neighborhoods.

The history of the Outfit is filled with many famous names.

Vincenzo Colosimo led the group in the early 1910s. After he was killed in 1920, Johnny Torrio took control. Torrio brought in new members from New York to help. Then, Al Capone became a very important leader. Capone took over after Torrio was hurt in a shooting in 1925. Capone was a very famous boss who led the gang during the violent Beer Wars. He was eventually sent to prison in 1931 for tax evasion.

Many leaders ruled the Outfit after Al Capone went to prison.

Paul Ricca became a major leader for many years. He shared power with Tony Accardo starting in 1943. Accardo became the sole boss after Ricca died in 1972. Accardo was one of the longest-serving bosses in history. He died in 1992 after many years of leadership. Another official boss was Joey Aiuppa, who served from 1971 to 1986. These leaders helped the group expand its reach across the country.

Today, the Outfit is different than it was in the past.

At its peak, the group's influence reached as far as California and Florida. It even had connections to the movie industry in Hollywood. However, more attention from law enforcement has caused the group to decline. Since the late 20th century, the group has become smaller. Even so, it remains a major crime group in the Chicago area. It still operates throughout the Midwestern United States and parts of the Southwest.
