Latin America is a large cultural region.

It sits in the Americas. It includes parts of North America and South America. It also includes islands in the Caribbean.

Most people in this area speak Spanish or Portuguese. These are called Romance languages. This is how the name comes about. Some people also include French speakers. This happens because French is a Romance language too.

Long ago, many groups lived here. The Maya, Aztecs, and Inca were some of these groups. They built great civilizations. Later, people from Spain and Portugal came to the region. They brought their own languages and religion. They also brought people from Africa to work as slaves. This changed the area a lot. Sadly, many native people died from new diseases and hard work.

Today, the region is split into four main parts. These are North America, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America.
