It is not defined just by where it sits on a map. Instead, it is defined by the languages people speak. Most people in this region speak Spanish or Portuguese. These are known as Romance languages. Because of this, the name Latin America was chosen. This region includes many different places. It covers parts of North America, Central America, and South America. It also includes many islands in the Caribbean.

There are different ways to group these countries. Some people use a very common definition. This definition includes places where people speak Spanish or Portuguese. It also includes areas where Roman Catholicism is the main religion. Under this rule, Puerto Rico is usually included. However, places like Jamaica or Belize are left out. This is because they speak English or Dutch. Another way to look at it includes French speakers. French is also a Romance language. This would add places like Haiti to the group.

Long ago, the land was home to many groups. These included the Olmec, Maya, Aztecs, and Inca. They built very advanced civilizations. Later, the kingdoms of Spain and Portugal arrived. They started colonies in the region. They brought their own languages and religion with them. They also brought people from Africa to work as slaves. This period was very hard for the native people. Many died from new diseases, violence, or forced labor. This changed the history of the region forever.

The history of the name itself is quite interesting. The term was first used around 1856. A Chilean politician named Francisco Bilbao used it at a conference in Paris. A Colombian writer named José María Torres Caicedo also used it in a poem. Both men wanted the countries to work together. They thought unity would help them stay independent. They wanted to protect their lands from foreign powers. They believed being united was the best way to stay free.

Today, we can divide the region into four main parts. These are North America, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America.
