Quebec is the center of this group. Quebec is a province in Canada. Many French speakers live in Canada. In New Brunswick, one third of the people speak French. Other people live on islands like Martinique and Guadeloupe. These are parts of France. Some live in Saint Pierre and Miquelon, too.

French speakers also live in South America. They live in French Guiana. Small groups live in the United States. You can find them in Louisiana and New York. They live in places like Texas and Florida. Some live in the Caribbean, too. This includes Haiti and Saint Lucia.

French is a Romance language. Because of this, some people call this part of Latin America. But that name usually means lands with Spanish or Portuguese speakers. There is a special award for these people. It is called the Ordre des francophones d'Amérique. It is given to members of the community.
