Lascaux is a famous network of caves in France.

These caves are located near the village of Montignac. They contain over 600 paintings on the walls and ceilings. Most of these paintings show large animals from a long time ago. Scientists think the art is between 17,000 and 22,000 years old. This makes the art part of the Upper Paleolithic period. Because the art is so special, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The artists used many different ways to make their work. They used mineral pigments like iron oxide and charcoal. These minerals provided red, yellow, and black colors. Some artists might have used animal fat or clay to hold the color. They could swab the paint onto the stone. Other times, they sprayed the mixture through a tube. In some soft spots, they even carved designs into the rock.

In September 1940, an 18-year-old named Marcel Ravidat found the cave. His dog was looking at a hole left by a fallen tree. Marcel and three friends, Jacques Marsal, Georges Agnel, and Simon Coencas, went inside. They thought they might find a secret passage to a nearby manor. Instead, they found amazing animal drawings. Later, an expert named Abbé Henri Breuil came to study the site. He made many sketches that help us see the art today.

The cave has many different named areas. One famous part is the Hall of the Bulls. This room has many large animals, including a very big bull. There is also a place called the Chamber of Felines. Another area is the Nave, which has a painting called "The Crossed Bison." This painting shows two animals overlapping to create depth. There is even a deep well that contains a drawing of a man with a bird head.

Many people visited the cave after it opened in 1948. However, the visitors caused problems for the art. The heat and moisture from 1,200 people per day damaged the walls. Fungi and lichen began to grow on the paintings. To save the art, the cave closed to the public in 1963. Now, people visit replicas instead. There are sites like Lascaux II and the new Lascaux IV.
