Many years ago, people painted on the cave walls. These paintings are very old. Experts think they are 17,000 to 22,000 years old. They show many large animals. You can see horses, deer, and bulls. Some paintings are very big. One bull is the largest animal ever found in cave art.

In 1940, a boy named Marcel Ravidat found the cave. His dog was looking at a hole in the ground. Marcel and his friends went inside. They found walls covered in art. They saw many different rooms. One room is called the Hall of the Bulls. Another room is called the Chamber of Felines.

Many people visited the cave after it opened. But the visitors changed the air. The heat and dampness hurt the paintings. The cave had to close in 1963 to stay safe. Now, you can visit exact copies of the cave. These copies help us see the art without hurting the real walls.
