Long ago, people lived in this cave. They painted animals on the walls. They used charcoal and red clay. They even used the bumps on the walls to make the animals look real.

One famous part is the ceiling. It has many bison painted on it.

In 1868, a man found the cave. Later, Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola studied the art. He thought the paintings were very old. Some experts did not believe him. They thought the art was fake. They did not think old people could paint so well. This argument lasted many years. Finally, people found more cave art in other places. They realized Sautuola was right.

Today, the real cave is closed to visitors. This helps keep the art safe from our breath. We can visit a replica instead. A replica is a copy that looks just like the real thing.
