She was an Anglo-Saxon noblewoman in England. Most history books say she was the wife of Leofric, the Earl of Mercia. Her name might mean "gift of God" in Old English. She lived during a time before the Norman Conquest. Some people believe she was born in Bucknall around 995 AD. However, many historians think some of those old records might not be true.

Godiva and Leofric were known for being very generous. They gave much of their wealth to religious houses and monasteries. In 1043, Leofric started a monastery at Coventry. A writer named Roger of Wendover said Godiva helped him decide to do this. They gave land and money to many different places. Godiva even gave a necklace worth 100 marks of silver to Coventry. She also gave a gold-fringed cloth to St Paul's Cathedral in London.

A very famous legend is about Godiva and the people of Coventry. The story says the people were suffering because of high taxes. Godiva wanted her husband to lower these taxes for the people. Her husband said he would only do it if she rode a horse through town without clothes. The legend says she rode through the streets covered only by her long hair. She told everyone to stay inside and shut their windows.

In the story, one man named Tom did not listen to the rules. He watched her ride through the streets. This is why people use the name "Peeping Tom" today. Some versions say he was a tailor. Some stories say he was struck blind or even died for looking.

Most historians do not think this ride actually happened. They say the legend started appearing in stories in the 13th century. It was not mentioned in any records for two hundred years after she lived.

Even though the ride is likely a legend, Godiva is still remembered. People in Coventry still celebrate her with special parades. There is even a large statue of her in Broadgate.

Some think her story might come from even older traditions. One idea is that it relates to spring festivals. Whether the story is true or not, it has stayed famous for hundreds of years. Her real life as a kind giver is still part of history.
