The river starts in the Southern Tablelands. It begins where two creeks meet. From there, it flows north and west. It joins thirty-seven other rivers along the way. The river ends near a place called Oxley. There, it joins a large swamp.

This river is unique. It has many wetlands along its path. Wetlands are wet areas of land. The river has nine very important wetlands. It also has lakes like Lake Cowal-Wilbertroy.

The water in the river is not always steady. Sometimes the river stops flowing for a year. Other times, it floods the land. At the town of Forbes, it floods about every seven years. In 1952, a huge flood hit Forbes. Many families had to leave their homes. Some people were even rescued from roofs by boats.

More than 100,000 people live near the river. Many people work on farms here. The river is also the home of the Wiradjuri people.
