It is the second longest river in the country. It flows through New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. The name comes from the Wiradjuri language. It means "big water."

The river flows through the lands of many Aboriginal peoples.

The river is very important for farming. It provides water for crops in the Riverina area. However, the river has changed over time. Dams like the Tantangara Dam take much of the water. This can be hard for native fish and plants. In fact, only 13 of the original 22 fish species live there now.

Floods can also happen. In 1852, a huge flood hit the town of Gundagai. The water was very high and many people died. The town had to be rebuilt on higher ground.
