It is the longest river in Australia. The river starts in the Australian Alps. From there, it flows across flat plains. It winds its way toward the sea.

The river helps mark borders between states. It forms the border between New South Wales and Victoria.

In some parts, it also marks the border for South Australia. Many rivers flow into the Murray. These are called tributaries. The Darling River is one of these big tributaries. Together, these rivers form the Murray–Darling basin. This basin covers about one-seventh of Australia.

Many animals live in the water. You might see the Murray cod. This is a famous fish. You might also find turtles, shrimp, and platypus. Red gum trees grow along the banks.
