The Murray River is a huge and important part of southeastern Australia.

It is the longest river in the whole country. The river begins high up in the Australian Alps. From there, it winds across flat inland plains. It travels northwest and then turns south toward the sea. This river is part of the Murray–Darling basin. This large area covers about one-seventh of Australia. Many other big rivers, like the Darling and Murrumbidgee, flow into it.

Water moves through the river in many different ways. The river has many tributaries that bring extra water into the main stream. Some parts of the river are very narrow, like the Barmah Choke. These narrow spots can limit how much water flows through. The river also uses locks and weirs to manage the water.

In some areas, the water flows into a large lake called Lake Alexandrina. Finally, the river reaches the Murray Mouth.

Here, the fresh water meets the Southern Ocean. To keep the mouth open, machines move sand away so it does not clog up.

Long ago, the river looked very different. Between 2.5 and 0.5 million years ago, the river ended in a massive lake. This was called Lake Bungunnia. It was a huge freshwater lake that covered a very large area.

About 600,000 years ago, this lake finally drained away. Much later, a movement in the earth called the Cadell Fault changed things. This fault happened about 25,000 years ago. It changed the path of the water. This change helped create the famous forests of river red gum trees.

There are many interesting facts about the river's size and its borders. The river is 2,508 kilometers long. It is also a border between different states. The line between New South Wales and Victoria sits at the top of the Victorian bank. This means the water and the riverbed belong to New South Wales. Some towns sit right along the water. Albury-Wodonga has 89,007 people. Mildura and Merbein has 35,451 people.

Other places, like Murray Bridge, have 16,804 people. The river can even dry up completely during very bad droughts.

Nature and people are closely linked to this river. Many animals call the Murray home. You can find the famous Murray cod and golden perch in the water.

You might also see platypus or water rats near the banks. Aboriginal Australians have important stories about the river. Some say the Great Ancestor, Ngurunderi, created the river. They believe he was chasing a large fish called Pondi. The river's paths were made by the chase. The river is a vital place for both animals and people today.
