The Riverina is a famous farming area in south-western New South Wales, Australia.

It is a special place because it has flat plains and enough water for crops. This water comes from big rivers like the Murray and the Murrumbidgee. These rivers flow east to west through the land. The region sits near the state of Victoria to the south. To the east, the Great Dividing Range marks the border.

Water is the key to how this region works. Most of the water is used for irrigation, which is a way to move water to plants. In the 2001–2002 season, people diverted 52% of the water from the Murray and Murrumbidgee rivers. A huge part of that, 77%, went straight to farming. This allows farmers to grow many different things. They grow rice and wine grapes in the valleys.

People have a very long history in the Riverina. Aboriginal groups, including the Wiradjuri people, have lived here for over 40,000 years. They used the rivers for food and for traveling in bark canoes. Later, Europeans arrived in the mid-19th century. Explorers like John Oxley and Charles Sturt traveled through the area.

Soon after, people started large farms for wool and beef. These early farms often used shepherds to watch over sheep at night.

There are many interesting facts about the land and its weather. The Riverina is in a "Hot Dry Zone." This means summers are very hot, but winters can be quite cold. It is so cold sometimes that snow has been seen in Albury and Wagga Wagga. Even Hay, which is near sea level, saw a snow flurry in 1936.

The soil changes as you move along the rivers. It is often sandy near the water but becomes more salty in other areas.

Today, the Riverina is a busy place with many important cities. Wagga Wagga is a major center that has a university campus. It also has two big sites for the Australian Defence Force.
