William James Farrer was a famous plant scientist.

He spent his life studying how to grow better crops. People in Australia call him the father of the Australian wheat industry. This is because his work helped the country grow much more wheat. He wanted to make sure farmers could grow enough food. His work changed how the whole nation farmed.

Farrer worked hard to solve big problems for wheat plants. One major problem was a disease called wheat leaf rust. This disease made the wheat harvests much smaller. To fix this, Farrer used a way of working called cross-pollination. This means he moved pollen from one plant to another to make new types. He even used simple hairpins to move the pollen before he had tools called forceps. He also tried to stop another disease called bunt or smut-ball. He mixed many different wheat types to find the very best parts of each one.

Farrer was born in England on April 3, 1845. He grew up in a town called Docker in Westmorland. He was a very smart student and won medals for math. Later, he went to Cambridge to study. In 1870, he moved to Australia. He moved because he had a health condition called tuberculosis. He hoped the warm, dry air in Australia would help him feel better. He lived on a farm named Lambrigg near the Murrumbidgee River.

His scientific work lasted for more than 20 years. He used the methods of a scientist named Gregor Mendel to help his plants. Farrer wrote all his results in special notebooks. He even wrote letters to other plant experts in France and India. In 1900, he finally found a great new type of wheat. He named it the Federation strain. He shared this wheat with farmers in 1903. This new wheat helped Australia's wheat harvest triple over twenty years.

Today, many things in Australia remember William Farrer.

A school and a suburb in Canberra are named after him. There is even a special high school for agriculture in Tamswag. You might have seen his face on an old Australian two-dollar note. His work helped make wheat a huge part of how the world eats. He showed how science can help feed many people. His legacy lives on in every field of wheat grown in Australia.
